Yes, there has been some warming in the past century or so, about 1 degree Fahrenheit. Before that, from about 1250 to 1850, we were in a cool period known as the Little Ice Age. Much of the recent warming actually occurred from about 1895 to 1940, with the biggest warming trend from about 1910 to 1935, well before the significant increase in fossil fuel use.
The year 1934 was actually the warmest year, with 1998 coming in second, and temperatures have declined slightly since then. Greenland reached its highest temperature in 1941 and has been cooling ever since. Temperatures have actually cooled slightly since 1998, very likely signaling another ice age similar to the Little Ice Age.

The Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality hearing scheduled for Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. in room 2123 Rayburn House Office Building has been postponed due to inclement weather. The hearing is entitled “Climate Change: Are Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Human Activities Contributing to a Warming of the Planet?”

The hearing will be rescheduled to a date and time to be announced later.

After the ice age scare of the late 1800s, the press has hawked four major trends in global climate change: cooling, then warming, then cooling again, and, now, warming again. During that period, the temperature increased an unspectacular 1 degree Fahrenheit. Yet we continuously are bombarded with claims of an impending global roasting, such as in Al Gore's frightening movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," and in the much-ballyhooed U.N. report released Feb. 1. Anyone daring to oppose this fashionable dogma masquerading as settled science is labeled a Luddite.

But columnist Debra J. Saunders reminds us the verdict is far from unanimous. "Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology Richard S. Lindzen complained to the Boston Globe about the 'shrill alarmism' of Gore's flick," Ms. Saunders writes. "Neil Frank, who was considered authoritative when he was the director of the National Hurricane Center, told the Washington Post that global warming is 'a hoax.' Hurricane expert William Gray of Colorado State University believes the Earth will start to cool within 10 years. University of Virginia professor emeritus Fred Singer ... argues that global warming is not human-induced but based on a solar cycle." Sixty Canadian scientists publicly announced last year that there is no consensus among climate scientists. Don't bet on global warming.
